Thomas...Yes, Quinn...Hell no!

Joe Thomas with the Cleveland Browns third pick?
I couldn’t have been happier.
Trading next year’s No.1 and more to get Brady Quinn? I couldn’t have been more pissed.
He’s not worthy.
I don’t understand the love affair with this guy. I know, I know, he was expected to be one of the top players taken in the draft and is supposed to be one of the top quarterbacks in college football.
I don’t get why people are so enamored with this kid. It’s not like the Browns will be playing Army, Navy and Stanford anytime soon. I’d rather give the guys we have now a shot at the QB spot rather than a Notre Dame QB that looks like he just stepped out of the cover of GQ Magazine.
When Savage and the boys took Thomas, I thought maybe they finally get it. I was blissful for three hours thinking that finally maybe the Browns knew what they were doing. Mortgaging next year’s draft to move back into the first round to take Brady Quinn ruined all hope I had that these guys know what they are doing in the Browns “War Room”
Thoughts?
Tomorrow reflections on the L-B Invite.

Draft day aproaches

Well, for the second straight day Thursday Mother Nature wiped the area prep sports slate completely clean.
At the moment with the ground saturated and dark clouds hanging low this morning, getting games set for this afternoon in doesn’t look too promising either. I just got an email from Riverdale AD Craig Taylor telling us that tonight’s make up baseball game between the Falcons and Colonel Crawford is already been postponed…again.
With sectional baseball and softball beginning next week let’s hope the weather breaks so the tournament schedule is disrupted as little as possible.
I know one event that won’t be postponed by weather this weekend and that’s the NFL Draft Saturday and Sunday in New York City.
As a Cleveland Browns fan I always have high expectations on draft day. But my high expectations turn to bitter anguish when I realize how many of the ballclub’s high draft choices have been utter failures in the NFL.
Here’s a great look at some of the Browns greatest draft bungles since they returned to the NFL in 1999.
I popped my 2007 season ticket package out of my bag. I want to share with you all why we should all remain on the Browns bandwagon and not partake in a purple Kool-Aid drink-a-thon before minicamp even starts.

A comprehensive plan is in place to make the Browns better for 2007, and we have begun to put that plan into action. Our staff is committed to building a core of impact players that will make the Browns a winner and our loyal fans proud. --- Browns GM Phil Savage.

Sorry if I am a little skeptical Phil but I have heard this before. In 2006, ‘05, ‘04, etc., etc.
I went on a rant in the newsroom shortly after the end of last season and told my good buddy Mark Heiman that if the Browns didn’t take a lineman in the first round of the draft that I was DONE. A successful offense isn’t built upon a foundation of skill players. The rock solid foundation of an offense lies in the five big eaters up front that block for the skill players.
So OK even if the Browns don’t take a lineman like Wisconsin’s Joe Thomas in the first round, I’ll still be a fan. I’ll just be an unhappy fan.

NOTEWORTHY:
L-B INVITE: If you see me there, make sure you step up and say Hello!

UF SIGNEE: Spring practice is over but the University of Findlay has added another former area prep football player to its roster.
Seth Morris, a 2006 Upper Sandusky graduate, has signed to play at UF beginning next fall. Morris attended the Ohio State University at Marion last year while lifting and staying in shape.

WAPAK HIRES COACH: Greenville High School head football coach Doug Zimmer was been named the new football coach at Wapakoneta. Zimmer, 41, replaces, Kevin Fell, who posted a 16-16 record and guided the Redskins to a playoff appearance in his three seasons as head coach. Greenville was 1-9 last year under Zimmer.

MEALER SIGNS WITH MICHIGAN: Wauseon junior Elliott Mealer has made a verbal commitment to play football at the University of Michigan beginning with the 2008 season.
Mealer chose Michigan over several Big Ten schools including Ohio State, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan State, Purdue and Northwestern, along with a pair of Mid-American Conference schools, Toledo and Bowling Green, plus several other Division I schools.
The 6-foot-6, 295-pound lineman was a Division IV All-Ohio selection last season.

HARRINGTON HEADED TO OSU: Sandusky St. Mary’s Patrick Harrington has signed a letter of intent to attend Ohio State University beginning next fall. Harrington is a four-year letterman in wrestling at St. Mary’s and was part of three Division III state championships. He also won back-to-back individual state crowns, taking the 103 title in 2006 and the 119 championship last month and finishing with a 176-14 career record.

L-B Invite

The Liberty-Benton Invitational is this weekend.
It’s probably one of the strongest small school track and field meets in the state. Last year probably a couple of dozen All-Ohioans competed in the meet including a few state champs.
I imagine this year will be no different. I’ll have a preview in tomorrow’s Courier and I‘ll be out there all day Saturday and I‘m looking forward to it.
I’ll take Liberty-Benton to win the girls title, and it will be a very talented girls field. L-B is kind of hampered by injuries on the boys side at the moment but I’ll make them a prohibitive favorite Saturday. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see strong showings from teams like Pandora-Gilboa, Bluffton, Columbus Grove and of course Hardin Northern.
Should be a good day, hopefully Mother Nature cooperates. Field events begin at 9 a.m. with the running event finals set for 1:30 p.m.

NOTEWORTHY:
DICK SCHULTZ: There will be another area track meet Saturday as Hopewell-Loudon hosts the annual Dick Schultz Invitational at Chieftain Stadium along the banks of Wolf Creek. The Chieftains have a very good boys team and I’d be surprised if they didn’t win the Midland Athletic League this season. They don’t have any standouts that I think are a shoo-in to place at state but they are solid in nearly every event. Look for them to win this weekend.

REISER TO THE TOP: At work, we don’t do much with those track dual meets we get. But believe me we study them and look for certain things that catch our eye. Last night was one of those nights where there was a big-time attention grabber. Elmwood freshman Katie Reiser has been making a name for herself running very well in the sprints for the Royals this season. But when I saw her beat Carey’s superb sprinter Danielle Jacoby that definitely makes someone who follows area track and field take notice. Makes me think big things are in store this season for Reiser.

NO HORNETS: Cory-Rawson won’t be competing at the Liberty-Benton Invitational this weekend. Evidently the Hornets have some kind of conflict with a band trip this weekend. It’s too bad, I was looking forward to a matchup between Cory-Rawson’s Dana Ford and Jacoby as well as seeing C-R’s Lucas Horstman in the 110 high hurdles.

TOURNEY DRAWS: The Northwest District will conduct it’s prep baseball and softball tournament draws Sunday. We’ll be posting them at www.thecourier.com Sunday as soon as they are available.

TOMORROW: No blogging tomorrow. But I will post an updated area track honor roll later tonight.

My Softball Rant

It’s been awhile since I put together a good, solid rant.
Here goes.
One of the things we do in the spring, every spring, is put together a list of baseball and softball leaders for each Saturday morning’s newspaper.
We fax and email each area baseball and softball coach and we even run a notice in the newspaper telling area coaches we would be more than happy to run their stats in the newspaper each Saturday morning. If that isn’t enough, when they call in their games we remind them to send us their stats each week.
Guess how many area softball coaches reported their stats last week? Well, we got a whopping total of 7 stats for the 30 schools that we cover.
That’s totally ridiculous and unacceptable,
Any coach worth their salt has stats that are at least semi updated each week. I’m not sure what to think anymore. Are they too busy to send in stats, incapable of figuring them out or do they just don’t care or take the sport seriously?
I don’t know what the answer is but the baseball coaches don’t seem to have much of a problem sending their stuff in.
I’m beginning to believe if they don’t care why should we.

NOTEWORTHY: Helms and Sons out of Findlay was awarded the contract to put in Field Turf at Donnell STadium at a cost of $681,000. The project was rebid last week as the Donnell Foundation wanted to make sure "Field Turf" was installed instead of some knockoff artificial surface. It's too bad the outdated track at Donnell will stay.

A great weekend

It was a great weekend weather-wise and everyone got their games in this weekend. Here’s hoping it stays that way.
Just an aside on sports writing. Believe me when I tell you we try and do the best that we can every day. With limited time and space it’s tough to get everything done we want to get done and others want us to do.

That said, we went to the Associated Press Society of Ohio awards banquet Sunday morning. Several Courier staffers were up for awards. It was so nice that most of the sports staff and a couple of people from the newsside had a little tailgate before the banquet. Miller Lite and a couple of Jello shots strictly for celebration purposes.

Anyway the Courier sports staff won several awards…
DIVISION III, Newspapers with daily circulation of 13,000 to 24,999
Best Sports Enterprise: 1, Jamie Baker and Mark Heiman, The (Findlay) Courier, "New OHSAA Divisions"; 2, Dave Hanneman, The (Findlay) Courier, "FHS and Substance Abuse"
Best Sports Columnist: 1, Dave Hanneman, The (Findlay) Courier
Best Sports Writer: 3, Mark Heiman, The (Findlay) Courier; HM, Dave Hanneman, The (Findlay) Courier.
Best Daily Sports Section: 2, The (Findlay) Courier.

I feel very lucky to work with outstanding sports writers and more importantly terrific individuals. I hope everyone feels as blessed in their workplace as I do in mine to be working with great people and friends.

Back to blogging about your local sports tomorrow. I have to rant about area high school softball coaches and their irresponsibility.

Short of time

There will be no bloggin' today. And I had planned a look at area track invitationals this weekend. The Fostoria Booster, Hardin Northern, Upper Sandusky Swankhouse Memorial, Tiffin Bill Krause Invitational and Ayersville Bob Diller Invites are all this weekend.

Unfortunately I have to roll out of the rack early as I'm a part of The Courier's Days of Caring team for the United Way and we have to work this morning doing a few things for the Open Arms domestic violence shelter beginning at 8 a.m.

I will post an updated area track honor roll later today.

Going up? Going down?

Well the OHSAA has revised its enrollment figures for the next two-year period and there were many, many changes made from the initial list it released a few weeks ago.
Many schools including Bluffton, Liberty-Benton, Patrick Henry and Hopewell-Loudon dropped by 20, 30 and even 40 or more pupils in both the boys and girls listings.
All I can say is that the number of students seem to be falling all across the area.
Here is a list of the revised figures by area conferences biggest to smallest…

FORT JENNINGS 60 Boys 47 Girls
MILLER CITY 55 Boys 51 Boys

I won’t rehash that old argument about how much bigger L-B is than the rest of the conference. We’ll pick that fight another day. But I will mention that they continue to be the largest school in the entire Northwest District without a wrestling team.
There will be some schools that will be switching divisions for the next two seasons. Fostoria’s enrollment is dropping like a rock. The Redmen have 246 boys and 236 girls in grades 9-11. But the only sport that they will drop in this period is football. Look for the Redmen to be Division IV next season. In the span of less than a decade the Redmen have gone from a II to a IV in football…amazing.

Carey and Riverdale will be right on the bubble and could be Division V or Division VI in football depending on the divisional breakdowns that will be adopted by the OHSAA Board of Control at its May meeting.

Looking at the fall sports, Riverdale will probably be Division III in volleyball. And there will be no crying from other area schools when powerful Ottawa-Glandorf probably moves back up to Division II in boys soccer. There won’t be any changes in divisions for area schools in golf, girls soccer, girls tennis or cross country.

In the winter, no changes in swimming but there are a few changes in basketball and wrestling in all probability. In boys basketball, Upper Sandusky will likely drop from a Division II to Division III school (and I hear rumors of a possible 6-foot-9 German exchange student moving into the district next year). Patrick Henry will go from Division III to Division IV…they’ll be a tough tournament team no doubt.
In girls basketball, both are right on the bubble but Upper Sandusky could move back up to Division II and Carey is likely to be in Division IV next season. That breaks up that outstanding Division III Bucyrus Sectional.
In wrestling, Ottawa-Glandorf will probably move back up to Division II. More on changes in the NW District wrestling here.

As for spring sports, no changes in track and field but Upper Sandusky and Ottawa-Glandorf will be Division III in baseball and Patrick Henry will move down to Division IV. Riverdale will likely get bumped up to Division III in softball.

Talent wasting away

For me it’s really sad when I see athletic talent that’s been wasted.
Sometimes it’s college athletes other times it’s professional athletes. That’s something that really bugs me. You see these guys that have the world by the tail. They are famous, talented, rich and some of them just piss it all away on drugs, criminal activity, whatever.
That’s something I just don’t and probably never will understand.
But today I want to write about something similar yet different.
I’m talking about wasted talent at the prep level.
I know it’s a choice and you can’t make kids go out for sports but it really does bug me to see talented athletes sitting in the stands watching instead of participating.
It really used to eat me up when I was coaching wrestling. We’d have talented kids that would come up though our biddy and junior high system. Some would wrestle for a year or two and eventually, for whatever reason, decide not to come out the following year. Some of those guys were even district qualifiers.
For whatever reason, Hardin Northern’s Travis Bolen and Carey’s Alexa Spurlock both decided not to go out for their respective school’s track teams so I’ve been told.
Both are extremely talented.
Bolen was a regional qualifier in the 100 and was a part of the Hardin Northern’s 400-meter relay team that finished third at state last season. Spurlock qualified for state in the long jump last season as a freshman and was a part of the Blue Devils’ regional champion 800 relay team.
It’s a shame that neither are participating in track this season. I just hope it’s not a choice they’ll regret later on.

From Bluffton High School to Boston

EDITOR'S NOTE: It was kind of a pleasant surprise to peruse the results of Monday's Boston Marathon and see a familiar name near the top of the results list. Mark Heiman is making a special contribution to the Buzz today and it's all about Ann Alyanak. But she'll always be thought of as Bluffton High School track and field standout Ann Stechschulte to us...

From Mark Heiman...
I had no more than sat down in my chair Monday when Jamie — also dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, as he and I had a living tribute to Don Ho — told me that Bluffton native Ann Alyanak had finished ninth in the Boston Marathon.
I looked at him quizzically and thought about it. We then said it about the same time, “Ann Stechschulte.”
Alyanak finished ninth in women’s division ov the world’s preeminent marathon. She covered the rainy, windy course in 2 hours, 38 minutes and 55 seconds. That time was good for 113th overall out of over 23,000 runners and was an Olympic 'A’ standard time.
A number of memories came flooding back from watching her on the basketball court, where she starred for the Pirates as a wing, to the track.
One of those memories is something I will never, ever forget and I can still see it vividly. It taught me a lesson. It definitely taught Alyanak a lesson and probably even the 10,000 or so fans that were watching the final Ohio High School Athletic Association state track meet in The Horseshoe.
During her senior year of 1997, Alyanak surprised the field by winning the high jump with a leap of 5-foot-6. Later in the day she won the 1,600-meter run, an event she had finished second in the previous year.
Then it was time for her race — the 800, which Alyanak had won the previous season.
Alyanak came down the backstretch with the lead. She was ahead of Minster’s Jessie Barhorst comfortably and was keeping Barhorst in her sights.
But Alyanak didn’t see Edgerton’s Kylee Studer, who was charging hard on the outside.
Now this is the part I can still see. Stechschulte slowed about 10 meters from the finish line and with about two steps left she was almost walking. Then she realized Studer was coming and lunged for the finish line, but in a photo finish placed second by .09 of a second.
It then turned into one of those moments in journalism that I don’t like. I had to ask her about the 800 finish. But there weren’t any tears or trembling lips. Alyanak was poised and straight forward.
“That was my stupidity. I let it slip out of my hands. I did not know she was there, but I know better than to let up at the end,” she said at the time.
For good measure, she may have called it stupidity, but Alyanak was anything but. She graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Bluffton and went to Purdue, where she also had a fabulous career.
Hopefully in the near future, I’ll get the chance to talk with Alyanak. I want to see if that lesson she learned that day 10 years ago proved fruitful as she runs toward her dream of competing in the marathon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
