Garlock...going, going gone

OK I know I promised to talk some BVC Basketball again. And I am not going to come through on my promise again.

Scott Garlock’s departure from Liberty-Benton is the news of the day around the prep scene in this area. He is leaving the school on

Findlay’s west side to become the new quarterback coach at the University of Findlay. You can read a story on Garlock’s move by The Courier’s Mark Heiman here.
Even you Liberty-Benton haters out there have to admit Garlock did one hell of a job turning around the program. His 47-12 record and playoff appearances speak for themselves. Let’s face it, prior to Garlock’s arrival the Eagles weren’t much of a player in the BVC in football and this season they climbed all the way to the Division V state semifinals.

The Eagles had football tradition, but most of it was pretty bad prior to Garlock’s arrival. He’s a pretty smart offensive coach and should do well as the QB coach. That’s the one Achilles heel the Oilers had this season --- offense. They were pretty much clueless.

Garlock had an inexperience, albeit talented freshman to play quarterback in Aaron Craft this season. Garlock was probably a big key in his development this season.

Here’s my question. How much of the success that L-B football had in recent years was because of Garlock and his assistants and how much was the talent L-B has walking the halls? Can they sustain the success?

Back to UF football…

Now Wauford has to find an offensive coordinator and again one of the names I’m hearing is a high profile high school coach with ties to the area. Not sure what Wauford will do on defense, the Oilers actually played pretty good defense when he was calling the shots this season. Will he have a coordinator or do the job himself? I think they held Division II power Grand Valley State to their lowest point total of the season.

Stay tuned.

Lets hope Garlock does not leave U of F next year. I hope Ashland does not flash some green or he will be gone.

I've been told that Coach Garlock has aspirations of being a collegiate head coach some day. For that to happen he had to have college coaching experience. They came close to the title game at L-B, perhaps as close as they ever will, so now might be the right time to leave. Where the success of L-B in football is concerned I think that credit has to go to the staff, it's not as though there had been a lack of athleticim there in the past. Part of the art of coaching is to recruit the halls and get the kids to bite. Convincing the basketball players and staff that strength training was a good thing helped alot as well.

Is Kris Alge the next U of F Offensive Coordinator?

Anybody surprised that Garlock moved on? Not me after his dump on Cory Rawson. Seems to me there are two kinds of coaches (to simplify it)...the coaches that coach for the kids and the coaches who coach for "numero uno".

If LB wants to have continued success on the gridiron, they will need a coach to commit to the program for more than a couple of years.

    Happy Holidays to All!

Blue Devil, you nailed it! I am glad others are not afraid to speak the truth, even if it is unpopular!

So you think that Coach Garlock should just stay and be coach in the BVC for the rest of his life? I'm guessing you're still in high school. In the real world, you need to sometime do what's best for you.

I see nothing wrong with Garlock going to Findlay. He felt this was a good opportunity to go, and he should. Great job at LB. He turned that program around.
Blue Devil, not sure what you mean. LB's had two football coaches for about the last 20 years. One had success and one didn't.

Garlock wants a head coach job in the college ranks. Lets hope someone from UF's conference does not need one. Garlock has proven he will go to another conference school if offered. Its all about Garlock, not the school or kids. He is selfish and will crap on those dedicated to him if it means advancement.
