OHSAA Enrollments: Number Crunching

Well the new OHSAA enrollment numbers are out and I think there’s a few problems with them.
I have created a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with all of the figures for the last two OHSAA enrollment periods. It gives a side by side comparison of the numbers for schools. You can take a look at it by clicking on this link.

OK, if you are a small school in Northwest Ohio I can see your student numbers rising or falling by 5, 10 or 15 kids. But in this part of the state where we essentially have zero or even negative population growth no one’s numbers should go up by 40 or 50 boys or girls in a 2 year period at least not at the small schools.
There are plenty of schools across the state who with the new figures have jumped more than 20 percent in their enrollment according to the new figures released this week by the OHSAA.
Here’s how the OHSAA gets the enrollment figures for each 2-year period. In October, each Ohio school must fill out a report for the Ohio Department of Education called an EMIS (Education Management Information System) report. The EMIS report is used by the ODE for various purposes including determining a school’s state funding which is based on their enrollment.
The OHSAA then takes the number of boys and girls in grades 9-11 and use those numbers to classify its member schools by size. Findlay’s numbers for the new period are 785 boys and 767 girls. That means in October Findlay High School had 785 boys and 767 girls in grades 9-11.
I think some area schools may have had an extra class added into their figures. That’s they only way I can explain their new enrollment figures compared to the ones the OHSAA used in 2005.

Here’s just a couple of examples of the numbers problems in area schools’ figures:
BLUFFTON -- Bluffton’s girls went from 145 girls in the 2005 count to 208 girls in the 2007 count -- an increase of 63 girls. That’s an increase of more than 25 percent in 2 years….Impossible.
HOPEWELL-LOUDON -- 103 boys in 2005 and 145 boys in 2007. Hard to believe since I’ve been told their native student population is declining but open enrollment has been keeping their student figures steady. Kinda think its hard to figure that their boys total would be that high. It would put them in Division III in basketball and Division V in football.
LIBERTY-BENTON: It’s a growth district but the new figures have the school gaining 19 boys and 22 girls. If true its going to put a couple of L-B teams on the bubble of moving up a division. They could move up to Division II in boys and girls track and golf. We’ll see if they contest the numbers.
LAKOTA -- Boys numbers are up 49 and girls numbers uo 79 to 241 girls in grades 9-11. No way these numbers are right, Lakota is shrinking by the day.
NEW RIEGEL -- Up 26 boys and a whopping 49 girls. No way the numbers of girls in the school increased by 40-45 percent in just 2 years.
Those are just a few of the problems I see in the numbers. I imagine many of the enrollment figures will be revised as long as school administrators are paying attention. Schools have until April 16 to contest the new enrollment figures.

NOTEWORTHY:
I BLEW IT: I just found 13 comments that needed "Moderation" most of the comments came from early on in the blog. Sorry for all those whose commets didn't appear until now. I blew it big time but the comments are now posted mostly from August and early Sept.

TRACK STARS: A couple of things that stood out for me working last night and taking area track and field results. McComb’s track team struggled in a triangular against powerful Napoleon and Ottawa-Glandorf but sophomore Katie Borgelt didn’t struggle. She won the only two evens for McComb taking the 1,600 (5:32.2) and 3,200 (12:08.0). A pretty impressive performance for the McComb runner against two very good track teams. Also a couple of school records were set in Patrick Henry’s dual with Swanton. Mykal Imbrock broke her own record in the shot put with a toss of 40-3 while Kyle Tietje set a new school record in the boys high jump with a leap of 6-1½.

BLOGGING SCHEDULE: Will have something for tomorrow but I’ll be taking Easter Weekend off and will be back at it Monday.

Cory-Rawson with 88 girls? Maybe that new soccer team will draw some new kids. sure...

On the boys side, HN and C-R will be switching places soon. That'll be interesting for the folks in Hornet-land
