I was had
I’m feeling a wee bit jilted today and a little melancholy too.
I took former North Baltimore football coach Ryan Hite at his word when he told me he was resigning because of personal issues that were family related. He said he wanted to put his family first in a story I wrote on his resignation in Tuesday’s Courier.
I guess I was a little naiive. A little? OK very naiive. He did tell me the uncertainty of the whole situation was a factor but in his letter of resignation to the North Baltimore Board of Education he laid it all out there.
We had an additional story you can read here.
Here’s Hite’s resignation letter.
OK, this tells me he doesn’t think the kids weren’t living up to their end of the bargain. He has high goals for the football program but the football players weren’t putting in the effort to get there.
Am I wrong? How does everyone else read those remarks?
Hey like I said I took him at his word. He’s a young, enthusiastic guy and I think he did some nice things at NB and has been a good member of the community. I think he might have bitten off more than he can chew with the job but he is young and idealistic.
On a side note, I’m amazed sometimes how some school administrators or coaches will tell you no comment or sometimes even lie when they don’t want something unpleasant out there in print. The truth is always better than a lie because they eventually come to light and then it makes everyone look bad. Not that I was necessarily lied to when he told me family concerns were an issue, but there were other reasons for his resignation and he didn’t want to see them in print…for him not sharing those reasons when he knew they were in his letter of resignation, I am a little disappointed. But he’s young and still learning.
Anyway whether or not the May 8 levy try passes or not kids that want to play sports will have to pony up. If the levy passes students will be charged $25 and $50 respectively for junior high school sports and if the levy fails the fees will rise to $250 for high school sports.
The entire plan is in Joy Brown’s story here.

Here’s Hite’s resignation letter.
"It has become overwhelmingly clear that the goals and expectations of myself and my staff differ from the goals and expectations of the majority of the football team," Hite wrote in his letter of resignation, which is dated Feb. 26.
"I believe that a successful team must have leaders and players that share a similar vision. Since the conclusion of the season, members of the program have decided to pursue a vision that differs with that of its leadership.
"Therefore, I feel it is within the best interests of myself and the program to respectfully resign from the position of head football coach and strength coach at North Baltimore High School."
OK, this tells me he doesn’t think the kids weren’t living up to their end of the bargain. He has high goals for the football program but the football players weren’t putting in the effort to get there.

It was a mistake to take the job in the firstt place. He should not have put himself in such a bad situation. He is young and will learn.

If Hite didn't want to expose the primary reason for resigning to the media, before he presented his letter to the board, he could have just said so instead of dishing out some PR bullcrap. He's not ready to take on a head coaching position. If he's lucky he can get an assistant's job and work up. Can't always rely on your last name to carry you through life...

blue devil 2, I think you should keep your opinions about someone that you don't even know anything about to yourself. Coach Hite is not the type of person to rely on his last name to get him places in life. Who are you to judge someone that you don't even know? It is ridiculous to listen to the BS that people like you want to say when you have no idea what it is like to be in his shoes. Why don't you go pass judgement on someone else?

Anonymous (one of many)..I'm not passing judgement...merely commenting on Hite Jr's actions the way I see it. He applied for, beat out 37 others (and if you think the name didn't factor into that, have I got an ocean front property for you!) and got a head coaching position with virtually no experience...then leaves when the going gets tough. What? he didn't think this job would be this big of a challenge?

This is the great thing about America. Everyone is free to express their opinions.
Now I think Ryan learned a lot this season and it will help him be a better coach in the future. AND he will coach in the future maybe even next year. Like I said I think he did a lot of good things. He brought the community together when a couple of his players' dad died unexpectedly, raised the team GPA, helped raise interest in football at the MS and midget level.
He'll be better for his one year at NB and I think maybe the school was better for having him there.
I'm outta here it's my day off and the fish are biting somewhere.

Hite did as good a job as he could in NB.The problems in NB goes much deeper then just the football program. You could bring in any coach you want too, without commitment from the players, parents, administrators, and community, its a lost cause. Maybe NB needs to concentrate on other things before getting their panties in a wad over football. Funny, someone said his last name got him the job, it also seems to bring out critics who has axes to grind because of his last name.

blue devil 2, you must have problems reading, because I never said that Ryan's last name had anything to do with getting him the job at NB, I said to stop saying that Ryan is relying on his last name to get him through life. Plus, do you know how hard it is to be a High School Football head coach and to have no support from parents, community and most importantly the players????? I am guessing not, so until you come to NB and be the head coach for a year keep your opinions to yourself and find something else to waste your time with.

J,
My daughter said there were workman at Donnell stadium this week putting little flag marker arounf the field. Heard anything about field turf? I heard from a long time referee that the last Donnell remaing on the board is refusing to get rid of grass and that turf would have to wait until they are no longer with us. Any of this talked about in open?

I'm getting confused with all the anonymouses on here ;-)
To answer one of you..no, I'm not a coach so I've not experienced coaching without support and how hard that would be... but I am not the one unable to read. According to the quote in Tuesday's Courier Mr. Hite got plenty of support:
"We had terrific support this season from the parents and the community. I learned a lot from them and hopefully they learned something from me, too." Ryan Hite Findlay Courier Mar 27

Oh please. Ryan's last name had everything to do with why he got the job. Okay 50% as the other 50% is probably because no one else was foolish enough to take it.
Ryan's statement in the original reason for leaving and his written submission led to two different reasons why he resigned.
Just be honest and NEVER use the kids as your real reason you want to leave unless you have no desire to ever coach again. Kids are impressionable!
