Van Buren chameleons

Here’s a simple sentence that describes Van Buren’s 67-54 regional semifinal win over Wynford last night at Anderson Arena.
The Black Knights did what they wanted whenever they wanted to against the Royals.
They darn near played a perfect basketball game.
I’ve gotten to see their last three tournament games and they are prep basketball’s version of a chameleon. They can change to whatever style they need to to win.
Against Ottawa Hills they struggled a little but were still able to gut out victory by outplaying the Green Bears down the stretch. Against unbeaten Toledo Christian the Black Knights used patience and passes to wear down the Eagles. In last night’s game, Van Buren’s defense got them off and running with easy transition baskets to cruise past Wynford.
It’s been the perfect combination during their tournament run of personnel, performance and style that’s got Van Buren to the regional finals.
Now Holgate is up next. It’ll be a night of watching the Tigers pass the ball to one another 12 or 13 times probably. If Holgate doesn’t do a better job of taking care of the basketball (they had 17 turnovers against Fort Jennings Tuesday) it’s going to be awfully tough for them to hang in there with VB.
Up tonight is Liberty-Benton and Columbus Africentric in the regional Division III semifinals at and Findlay in the Division I regional semis at UT. My gut instinct tells my L-B wins but Findlay doesn’t.
We shall see.

NOTEWORTHY:
NO BASEBALL AT OLD FORT: It’s kind of sad but Old Fort will not field a baseball team this season. According to reports on the latest school board meeting, the school has decided there isn’t enough interest to field a team for the 2007 season. Only nine boys signed up to play baseball this year and after months of requests for more participation no one stepped forward to join the team.

E.J. Frost and the athletes have done a fine job. Congrats and best of luck as the field continues to dwindle. As far as Old Fort is concerned, is there an underlying cause like low enrollment or pay-to-play responsible? I know that OF has never been anything but a small school, but has the enrollment dropped even lower? Although they have had some decent representation in track and cross country it never seemed like a situation where track would attract the boys to the demise of the baseball team.

OF had the same issue in Soccer last fall. They came up with a team/coach just before the season started. Not sure whats going on over there.

Yep Old Fort did have a problem finding a soccer coach. I think that problem came about because they couldn't find a coach last spring and their athletic director resigned. They didn't hire and AD until right before school started.
Enrollment there had remained pretty steady thanks to open enrollment I've been told.
As far as baseball goes I think they've had a lot of coaching turnover and that usually spells doom at a small school like OF. I'm sure the problem will get resolved and hopefully they'll field a team in 2008.

Not sure if it's the case at Old Fort, but for some reason, soccer feels like it needs to encompass two seasons, fall and spring in this area. When is youth baseball, in the spring. It's sad that the great sport of baseball is falling to wayside because it's a tough sport to play
