Track time?

I imagine a lot of area track teams are chomping at the bit to get out on that 400-meter oval this weekend.
All of last weekend’s invitationals were either canceled or postponed due to the shitty weather we had over Easter weekend. Customarily I would have said crappy weather. But the weather last weekend was beyond crappy and when we start blogging at The Courier they may draw the line at using an expletive to describe the weather so I felt the urge to use it right there.
The weather forecast for this weekend is none too promising. Here’s the forecast per the National Weather Service: SATURDAY...BECOMING CLOUDY. A CHANCE OF RAIN...MAINLY IN THE AFTERNOON. HIGHS IN THE MID 40S. NORTH WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH. CHANCE OF
RAIN 50 PERCENT.
Hopefully it will be nice enough to get these meets in. Anyway here is a look at each of the four area invites set for this weekend.

First Federal Invitational
WHERE: Fostoria Memorial Stadium.
WHEN: Saturday, 10 a.m. running event finals no earlier than 12:15 p.m.
AREA TEAMS COMPETING: Arcadia, Carey, Cory-Rawson, Hopewell-Loudon, New Riegel, North Baltimore, Pandora-Gilboa, St. Wendelin and Van Buren.
DEFENDING CHAMPS: Carey girls, Hopewell-Loudon boys.
WHAT TO WATCH: Should be an interesting meet. The Blue Devils, led by All-Ohioan Danielle Jacoby, are the area favorites in the girls meet. Cory-Rawson’s Dana Ford will be one of the favorites in the sprint races on the girls side and St. Wendelin freshman Juanna Gase has been making a name for herself so far this season for the Mohawks. Hopewell-Loudon has the depth needed to defend its boys title. Pandora-Gilboa’s boys look to be improved and don’t be surprised to see Van Buren’s Dusty Spangler win the pole vault.

Columbus Grove Invitational
WHERE: Columbus Grove’s Clymer Stadium
WHEN: Saturday, 10 a.m., running event finals 12:30 p.m.
AREA TEAMS COMPETING: Arlington, Ada, Columbus Grove, Fort Jennings and Ottoville.
DEFENDING CHAMPS: Columbus Grove boys and girls.
WHAT TO WATCH: Outstanding weather made for a record-setting meet last year. CG pole vaulter Heath Nickels has already vaulted over 15-feet this season while teammate Cory Meuleman is the defending Division III district champ and had a toss of 170-½ this week. With a group of outstanding relay teams, the Bulldogs should also fare well in the girls meet.

Ottawa-Glandorf Gold Medal Invitational
WHERE: Ottawa-Glandorf High School.
WHEN: Saturday,
AREA TEAMS COMPETING: Ottawa-Glandorf, Bluffton, Liberty-Benton.
DEFENDING CHAMPS: Liberty-Benton boys, Ottawa-Glandorf girls.
WHAT TO WATCH: Too many outstanding area athletes competing here to list them all. John Guagenti from Bluffton will be a runner to watch for in the 400 in the boys meet. It will be the first test for Liberty-Benton’s boys team who were state runners-up last season. The Eagles will seek to defend their girls crown with all-Ohioan Kesha Brooks leading a strong group of talented runners from L-B. The Titans are no slouches either with standout Allison Schroeder leading the way in the hurdles .

Patrick Henry Invitational
WHERE: Patrick Henry High School.
WHEN: Saturday, 9 a.m.
AREA TEAMS COMPETING: Patrick Henry, McComb, Elmwood, Leipsic.
DEFENDING CHAMPS: Celina (not sure if they are participating this year).
WHAT TO WATCH: Patrick Henry’s boys were second and the girls were third as the school had a track renaissance last year. PH’s Mykal Imbrock owns the school record in the shot put with a throw of over 40-feet this season. McComb’s Katie Borgelt was impressive in sweeping the distance races in a triangular with O-G and Napoleon recently. PH’s boys team is awash in top-notch sprinters and Kyle Tietje recently set the school record in the high jump. It should also be noted that Leipsic’s teams have markedly improved as well.

I saw Pandora's boys perform at Bluffton on Tuesday and they have a nice squad. They are capable of making things interesting in several events for L-B when the BVC meet rolls around. They have some holes, but are a much improved team.

Speaking of "Invites". Anyone else think there are way too many these days? We used to have just a few with flat-out loaded fields. Now they seem to be a dime a dozen.

I am sure Pandora is much improved this year. Which is good for the BVC since very few coaches work real hard at track. I really doubt that Pandora will be making things interesting for LB this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see LB win by 80 plus points this year.

As for the BVC schools not taking spring sports seriously...that's a hot topic for another rainy day...thanks for the update on the PH Invite
