Going up? Going down?

Well the OHSAA has revised its enrollment figures for the next two-year period and there were many, many changes made from the initial list it released a few weeks ago.
Many schools including Bluffton, Liberty-Benton, Patrick Henry and Hopewell-Loudon dropped by 20, 30 and even 40 or more pupils in both the boys and girls listings.
All I can say is that the number of students seem to be falling all across the area.
Here is a list of the revised figures by area conferences biggest to smallest…

GREATER BUCKEYE CONFERENCE

CONTINENTAL 90 Boys 78 Girls
KALIDA 77 Boys 79 Girls
FORT JENNINGS 60 Boys 47 Girls
MILLER CITY 55 Boys 51 Boys

I won’t rehash that old argument about how much bigger L-B is than the rest of the conference. We’ll pick that fight another day. But I will mention that they continue to be the largest school in the entire Northwest District without a wrestling team.
There will be some schools that will be switching divisions for the next two seasons. Fostoria’s enrollment is dropping like a rock. The Redmen have 246 boys and 236 girls in grades 9-11. But the only sport that they will drop in this period is football. Look for the Redmen to be Division IV next season. In the span of less than a decade the Redmen have gone from a II to a IV in football…amazing.

Carey and Riverdale will be right on the bubble and could be Division V or Division VI in football depending on the divisional breakdowns that will be adopted by the OHSAA Board of Control at its May meeting.

Looking at the fall sports, Riverdale will probably be Division III in volleyball. And there will be no crying from other area schools when powerful Ottawa-Glandorf probably moves back up to Division II in boys soccer. There won’t be any changes in divisions for area schools in golf, girls soccer, girls tennis or cross country.

In the winter, no changes in swimming but there are a few changes in basketball and wrestling in all probability. In boys basketball, Upper Sandusky will likely drop from a Division II to Division III school (and I hear rumors of a possible 6-foot-9 German exchange student moving into the district next year). Patrick Henry will go from Division III to Division IV…they’ll be a tough tournament team no doubt.
In girls basketball, both are right on the bubble but Upper Sandusky could move back up to Division II and Carey is likely to be in Division IV next season. That breaks up that outstanding Division III Bucyrus Sectional.
In wrestling, Ottawa-Glandorf will probably move back up to Division II. More on changes in the NW District wrestling here.

As for spring sports, no changes in track and field but Upper Sandusky and Ottawa-Glandorf will be Division III in baseball and Patrick Henry will move down to Division IV. Riverdale will likely get bumped up to Division III in softball.
