Talent wasting away

For me it’s really sad when I see athletic talent that’s been wasted.
Sometimes it’s college athletes other times it’s professional athletes. That’s something that really bugs me. You see these guys that have the world by the tail. They are famous, talented, rich and some of them just piss it all away on drugs, criminal activity, whatever.
That’s something I just don’t and probably never will understand.
But today I want to write about something similar yet different.
I’m talking about wasted talent at the prep level.
I know it’s a choice and you can’t make kids go out for sports but it really does bug me to see talented athletes sitting in the stands watching instead of participating.
It really used to eat me up when I was coaching wrestling. We’d have talented kids that would come up though our biddy and junior high system. Some would wrestle for a year or two and eventually, for whatever reason, decide not to come out the following year. Some of those guys were even district qualifiers.
For whatever reason, Hardin Northern’s Travis Bolen and Carey’s Alexa Spurlock both decided not to go out for their respective school’s track teams so I’ve been told.
Both are extremely talented.
Bolen was a regional qualifier in the 100 and was a part of the Hardin Northern’s 400-meter relay team that finished third at state last season. Spurlock qualified for state in the long jump last season as a freshman and was a part of the Blue Devils’ regional champion 800 relay team.
It’s a shame that neither are participating in track this season. I just hope it’s not a choice they’ll regret later on.

Good story. I too shake my head when I see talented athletes sitting out. You get one shot at being a high school athlete. They will regret their decisions.

One thing I fear is an increasing tendency for youth to stop taking positive chances by sticking their neck out in competitive situations, opting for other ways to fill the void. Some people don't want to work hard enough to dare greatly, some have a fear of failure. There are other reasons, both good and bad, that cause kids to opt out of expressing their talents athletically. There are a some troubling things I see more and more nowadays after many years of coaching, one being the sense of entitlement kids have where athletics are concerned. Too many simply feel that being part of a team entitles them to a certain number of minutes or some other desired outcome. Often this attitude exists despite not having made a representative effort toward personal improvement. A man who coached me in high school in the 70's who aslo happens to be the greatest role model I have had in my athletic experience commented to me a few years ago that kids have changed. For years we have been told that kids don't change, but after reflecting on the man's statement I have observed that time has proven the man correct more than I care to admit. What I struggle with is the idea that perhaps change is not only inevitable, but for the best. Maybe the things I learned through sports so many years ago are not as relevant as they once were and the times demand a different approach, although I doubt it.

We still admire work ethic, team chemistry, and those things we were taught thorugh athletic participation. Are we doing a good enough job teaching those things today? Have societal changes resulted in us becoming too soft? Have the squeaky wheels intimidated administrators to the point that we have, in essence, been forced to alter our methods and expectations. I hope not, but I wonder. With all the advances we have made in training and facilities are we seeing a proportionate improvement in performance?

Things have changed and it does appear kids have changed. How far the whole dynamic plays out is anyone's guess.

    Sorry this was so long.

Excellent comment CDP. As a wrestling coach I know that one reason kids don't go out sometimes if the embarassment of losing in front of their peers and others. They can't deal with it. And in the sport of wrestling...there's no one else to blame cause it's you and only you out there in the middle of the mat. There are many kids that just can't deal with it.
