L-B Invite

The Liberty-Benton Invitational is this weekend.
It’s probably one of the strongest small school track and field meets in the state. Last year probably a couple of dozen All-Ohioans competed in the meet including a few state champs.
I imagine this year will be no different. I’ll have a preview in tomorrow’s Courier and I‘ll be out there all day Saturday and I‘m looking forward to it.
I’ll take Liberty-Benton to win the girls title, and it will be a very talented girls field. L-B is kind of hampered by injuries on the boys side at the moment but I’ll make them a prohibitive favorite Saturday. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see strong showings from teams like Pandora-Gilboa, Bluffton, Columbus Grove and of course Hardin Northern.
Should be a good day, hopefully Mother Nature cooperates. Field events begin at 9 a.m. with the running event finals set for 1:30 p.m.

NOTEWORTHY:
DICK SCHULTZ: There will be another area track meet Saturday as Hopewell-Loudon hosts the annual Dick Schultz Invitational at Chieftain Stadium along the banks of Wolf Creek. The Chieftains have a very good boys team and I’d be surprised if they didn’t win the Midland Athletic League this season. They don’t have any standouts that I think are a shoo-in to place at state but they are solid in nearly every event. Look for them to win this weekend.

REISER TO THE TOP: At work, we don’t do much with those track dual meets we get. But believe me we study them and look for certain things that catch our eye. Last night was one of those nights where there was a big-time attention grabber. Elmwood freshman Katie Reiser has been making a name for herself running very well in the sprints for the Royals this season. But when I saw her beat Carey’s superb sprinter Danielle Jacoby that definitely makes someone who follows area track and field take notice. Makes me think big things are in store this season for Reiser.

NO HORNETS: Cory-Rawson won’t be competing at the Liberty-Benton Invitational this weekend. Evidently the Hornets have some kind of conflict with a band trip this weekend. It’s too bad, I was looking forward to a matchup between Cory-Rawson’s Dana Ford and Jacoby as well as seeing C-R’s Lucas Horstman in the 110 high hurdles.

TOURNEY DRAWS: The Northwest District will conduct it’s prep baseball and softball tournament draws Sunday. We’ll be posting them at www.thecourier.com Sunday as soon as they are available.

TOMORROW: No blogging tomorrow. But I will post an updated area track honor roll later tonight.

L-B would have to be the favorite on both sides. The L-B boys are a really good track team with few holes, but it would surprise me to see them score many points in Columbus this year. Their depth will carry them to district and perhaps regional titles.

I look for Columbus Grove, H-N, and P-G to complete the top four, although their placement 2-4 is something only the Good Lord knows. Pandora is a team that will be reckoned with. Bluffton is a year away from having the type of squad they are accustomed to, middle of the pack this year with only two outstanding guys in Guagenti and Herr.

Had a chance to see part of the Pole Vault in the LB Jr Hi Invite. (had to leave for another commitment :-<) Keller is really good. Saw him clear 13' and his first attempt at 13'6, looked like he had a foot over at but came down on the bar. I don't think 14' this year is out of the question.
