Picking it...

So what do I know today? Apparently not a hell of a lot. I went 12-5 picking games last week bringing my season record to 36-14. I think this week’s games are a little more cut and dried but surely there will be a few upsets along the way.

As usual I will post our Friday game notes sometime tonight when I get them finished. In the mean time here are this week’s selections.

I am also working on a couple of stories about Dick Krauss retiring after nearly 50 years of involvement with OHio HS athletics and about former Browns and Buckeyes great Dick Schafrath speaking in Findlay yesterday.

Texarkana, Texas TIGERS over Findlay TROJANS -- Trojans haven’t won yet and I don’t expect a victory this week.

Arlington RED DEVILS over Cory-Rawson HORNETS -- toughest pick of the week winner could battle with McComb for the No.3 spot in the conference.

Hardin Northern POLAR BEARS over Arcadia REDSKINS -- Bears’ offensive juggernaut keeps rolling along.

Van Buren BLACK KNIGHTS over Leipsic VIKINGS -- Give the offensive edge and victory to the Knights.

Liberty-Benton EAGLES over Vanlue WILDCATS -- Looks like the Lue’s best chance at a win may have come in Week 1.

McComb PANTHERS over Pandora-Gilboa ROCKETS -- Bet the Panthers bounce back this week.

Carey BLUE DEVILS over St. Wendelin MOHAWKS -- At least Carey is scoring some points this season.

Crestline BULLDOGS over Riverdale FALCONS -- Glad to see the Falcons get off the schneid last week.

Fostoria Senior REDMEN over Galion TIGERS -- Time for the Redmen to step up especially on defense.

Bellevue REDMEN over Upper Sandusky RAMS -- Upper let one slip away last week and this week’s opponent is even tougher.

Convoy Crestview KNIGHTS over Bluffton PIRATES -- Just when you think you have the NWC figured out Jefferson has to become good again.

Lima Central Catholic THUNDERBIRDS over Columbus Grove BULLDOGS -- If you were to tell me Grove would start the season 0-4 I would have asked what you were smoking.

Ada BULLDOGS over Upper Scioto Valley RAMS -- This isn’t Ridgemont the Rams are facing this week.

Patrick Henry PATRIOTS over Liberty Center TIGERS -- Tigers will leave it all on the field against their rivals…but PH is just too much.

Elmwood ROYALS over Lake FLYERS -- Elmwood can’t afford another misstep if they want to make the playoffs.

Ottawa-Glandorf TITANS over Elida BULLDOGS -- Read that a couple of key Bulldogs have quit the team. What kind of parent lets their kid quit in the middle of the season?

Hopewell-Loudon CHIEFTAINS over Fremont St. Joseph CRIMSON STREAKS -- St. Joseph has improved but Hopewell-Loudon is still better.

Tiffin Calvert SENECAS over North Baltimore TIGERS -- I’ll be pulling for the Tigers the rest of the way.

NOTEWORTHY:
This is the first weekend of conference play in the MAL, NCC, SLL and NOL so why not take a look at the contenders for league titles.

MAL
I think it will come down to three teams -- Hopewell-Loudon, Seneca East and Mohawk and the Tigers and Warriors will square off Friday night. I’m not sure who to take in that game. But the MAL belongs to Hopewell-Loudon until someone can finally knock them off. I think it will be Carey and Calvert battling for fifth place and St. Wendelin and North Baltimore playing for seventh.

NCC
It’s been an even less than lackluster start for the teams in the NCC this season. The conference has combined for a 9-15 record and just one team -- Lucas managed to get through the non-conference portion of their schedule unscathed. Maybe the Cubs are the best of the bunch but I’d put my money on Wynford to win another title. If Riverdale can build off last week’s win…who knows.

NOL
Fostoria was picked second in the NOL this season and after losses to Ottawa-Glandorf and Whitmer that might be a stretch. But it’s not like they were blown out in those losses and if they make the necessary adjustments, especially on defense they will be a factor in the conference race. Upper Sandusky heads into league play at 2-1 and if they can pick off three more victories in the NOL it wouldn’t be a bad season for the Rammies. Tiffin and Bellevue are my teams to beat…Book it.

SLL
Despite losing their quarterback, Elmwood has done pretty well. The schedule maker did do the Royals a favor putting NB, Port Clinton and Lake back-to-back. The Royals need to keep rolling and can’t afford to stumble in the league because Eastwood looks pretty good as does Otsego if Donald is sill churning up yardage. I like the Royals over the Eagles in the SLL.
