Picks and Notes

Last week was a little more like it.

I was 13-3 picking area games bringing the season record to 75-26. I have a whole lot more self-esteem this week.

Anyway here are the picks for this week. As usual the notes will be posted later tonight. I needed to get this out early today to get to the Division III district golf tournament which gets underway at 9 a.m.

There are some noteworthy items at the bottom of the picks as well as the daily news links.

Arlington RED DEVILS over Arcadia REDSKINS -- I think the Redskins have improved but they’re record just doesn’t show it.
Hardin Northern POLAR BEARS over Cory-Rawson HORNETS -- No missteps for the Polar Bears this week.
Liberty-Benton EAGLES over Leipsic VIKINGS -- Offensive problems continue to plague Leipsic.
Van Buren BLACK KNIGHTS over Pandora-Gilboa ROCKETS -- This one is a toss-up but I’ll take the Knights.
McComb PANTHERS over Vanlue WILDCATS -- Those scrappy Wildcats just don’t have enough depth to seal the deal.
Findlay TROJANS over Marion Harding PRESIDENTS -- Why? I don’t know just a guess but next week I’ll be taking the Little Giants.
Seneca East TIGERS over Carey BLUE DEVILS -- Gotta go with the Tigers in the one.
Fostoria St. Wendelin MOHAWKS over North Baltimore TIGERS -- My head says take the Mohawks but I think NB might be primed for the upset.
Bucyrus REDMEN over Riverdale FALCONS -- This one will be closer than a lot of people think.
\Upper Sandusky RAMS over Galion Senior TIGERS -- I was shocked by last week’s loss to Norwalk. But Galion shouldn’t match up with the Rams
Willard CRIMSON FLASHES over Fostoria Senior REDMEN -- Redmen have a lot of great athletes but they just aren’t getting it done.
Columbus Grove BULLDOGS over Delphos Jefferson WILDCATS -- I’m thinking the Bulldogs’ Dr. Jekyll will show up this week not Mr. Hyde.
Ada BULLDOGS over Convoy Crestview KNIGHTS -- Bulldogs win again in another offensive shoot out.
Bluffton PIRATES over Spencerville BEARCATS -- Bluffton needs every win from here on out.
Patrick Henry PATRIOTS over Bryan GOLDEN BEARS -- Patriots gear up for a tough stretch run with Archbold and Wauseon coming up.
Elmwood ROYALS at Gibsonburg GOLDEN BEARS -- Last laugher before getting down to business for the Royals.
Ottawa-Glandorf TITANS over Van Wert COUGARS -- The Cougs are destined for a last place WBL finish,
Hopewell-Loudon CHIEFTAINS at TIFFIN CALVERT SENECAS -- Colatruglio takes down his alma mater.

NOTEWORTHY:
GOOD EATS:
I want to broaden my out-of-town culinary experiences. Anyone have any out of the way places around the area I probably don’t know about that I should try. A nice restaurant, bar and grill anything? Where’s your favorite place to go outside of the Findlay city limits. Make sure and give me recommendation.

A NEW BLOG?: We might just be starting a sports blog at the Courier. It’s been thrown out there but bigger people in the Findlay Publishing Company than me will be making that decision. I think it’s a good idea because anything you can do to draw more people to your newspaper or website can’t be a bad thing. Plus I think interaction with readers in important because it can give you a different perspective on things.

MIDLAND SUBURBAN SOCCER LEAGUE: Yes Virginia, there is a Midland Suburban Soccer League. Liberty-Benton is on top of both the boys and girls league standings. Problem is it’s a ship without direction. The league doesn’t have a commissioner currently. Each commissioner they’ve had over the last three years have retired or moved on to greener pastures. There will be a league champ and all-conference teams and a AD’s meeting for the league is scheduled for next week.

L-B RESTROOMS: Yes, Liberty-Benton will be getting restrooms at the stadium…but not until next fall probably. There are also plans to enclose the home side bleachers for added storage at the school. Thank goodness there’s nothing like standing in line for the port-a-johns in the rain, wind and cold. Next year look for the Eagles to possibly host playoff games at the stadium and who knows maybe even a district track meet.

HOCKEY UPDATE: You can be a member of Findlay’s newest hockey team. Yep, the Findlay Freedom is having an open tryout camp I believe it’s Oct. 14 at The Cube (That’s the old HRC for all of you that are out of the loop). If you feel like lacing up the skates it’s going to cost you though. The team is charging all players a $50 fee just to try out for the team. Hmmm, the tryouts for the Ohio Professional Basketball League also cost $50., The organizers held tryout camps all over the state, charged the players for tryouts and never formed the league.
Well at least this hockey team hasn’t skipped town without paying for its ice time like the last group, the Findlay Wolfpack did. Nope, they paid the city by credit card.
If you’re interested, and honestly I’m not sure many are. More information is available here on the North East Hockey League website or at the Findlay Freedom Website.

Good eats? You can check out the Bombshelter in Glandorf, the Bowling Alley in Pandora, Tony's in Ottawa, and there is a small bar similar to the Fern Cafe Right near the RR tracks in Ottawa on 224 that has a daily lunch special.

The soccer league needs a commissioner? Give them my contact information, I'll be more than happy to get some experience. I'll be graduating this coming summer with a degree in sport management at BGSU.
