Volleyblog and other thoughts

Get out the Cinderella slipper.

It’s looking like it fits Patrick Henry’s volleyball team quite nicely.

I was shocked when I saw that PH (5-15) knocked off New Riegel (15-8) in the first round of the sectional volleyball tournament and even mentioned it on this blog as one of the biggest upsets last weekend. Since then all the Patriots have done is beat Blanchard Valley Conference co-champion Leipsic (17-7) and another pretty good team in McComb (17-7) to reach the district finals for the second straight year. The Patriots are currently 7-15.

Not sure what to make of this. PH qualified for regionals last season but didn’t play well all season long. There was a time this season when PH I believe lost like nine straight matches.

Sometimes it’s satisfying for a coach to see everything come together at just the right time and it appears that everything is coming together nicely for PH coach Kristen Cheslock’s team. That said, I’ll take Hardin Northern to beat the Patriots in Saturday’s 2 p.m. district final match at Liberty-Benton.

Kalida (17-6) will also be looking to make it back to regionals when they play Ada in a district semifinal match at Lima Perry. Kalida’s Jeremy Stober is a terrific coach and I expect the Wildcats to be well-prepared for their match with the Bulldogs. Either way, the volleyball season will extend into the weekend for the Courier sports staff as the Kalida-Ada winner takes on the PH-HN winner in the semifinals of next week’s Division IV regional at Elida.

It was a tough night for area volleyball teams. Bluffton lost for the just the second time in 24 matches when they were ousted in the Division III district semifinals at Liberty-Benton by Lima Central Catholic. Ottawa-Glandorf, the Western Buckeye League champs, were bounced from the Division II tournament by Bowling Green. Both of those outcomes kind of surprised me. I think Bluffton and O-G were the best teams in the area this season.

SOCCER THOUGHTS: Continental or Riverdale’s girls: one team is headed to the Division II regional tournament for the first time in school history when they play Saturday afternoon at Toledo St. John’s. Continental is unbeaten and both teams are playing very well right now. Ottawa-Glandorf should be the favorite when they take on St. Marys Memorial at Elida Saturday.

Findlay hosts Ashland in a Division I girls district semifinal. There’s something just wrong about a school getting to play a regional match on its home field. Nothing against the girls on the FHS team but I hope the Trojans lose. Some day, some time I’ll tell you why.

In boys action, Bluffton takes on unbeaten Ottawa Hills in a Division III district final at Van Buren’s Rocky Ford Field (no that’s not the field’s actual name but I like it). That should be a close low-scoring battle with the winner headed to regionals. I think the big game though will be at Lima Shawnee between tiny Fort Jennings and Ottawa-Glandorf. The Musketeers lost to O-G 2-1 but that was way back on Aug. 28. Fort Jennings had to negotiate it’s way through a tough sectional involving the rest of the PCL, it will be interesting how much they have left after a couple of tough tournament matches already.

I’ll be covering Saturday’s regional cross country meet in Tiffin. Thoughts on that Sunday.

WEEKEND BLOGGING: I’ll try and put something together Saturday morning looking at who’s in and who’s out of the playoffs before I head to Tiffin.

DEER DECOY: ESPN will air a segment on the Kenton Deer Decoy case on it’s Outside the Lines program today at 3:30 p.m.
