Picking an MVP
Who’s your MVP?
Ok the regular season is over for prep football teams. Lets talk about the MVP which player made the biggest impact this season.
Let me throw out a few names and you make the call…
Hardin Northern’s Nathan Bame -- led the BVC in rushing and scoring. Had a couple of games with unbelievable numbers. Was one part of an awesome Polar Bears offensive attack this season.
Columbus Grove’s Jeremy Harnishfeger -- His rushing efforts helped CG win four of its last 5 games and secure a playoff birth after the Dogs started the season 0-4.
Elmwood’s Dusty Brown -- Rushed for well over 1,000 yards and passed for another 500 as Elmwood’s quarterback this season. Made the switch from running back to quarterback after Elmwood’s starter went down with an injury in the Royals’ final preseason scrimmage.
Ottawa-Glandorf’s Brian Recker -- Rushed for 1,081 yards in the Titans last 5 games to put O-G into the playoffs.
Liberty-Benton’s Michael Busch -- One of the BVC’s top receivers and the state record holder for points by a kicker. All done while playing with a broken foot.
Ada’s Zac Dysert -- Threw for over 3,000 yards at quarterback and led Ada to their first playoff appearance since 1994.
It’s a tough call. Each had an excellent season. I might sway toward Brown because he was thrown in at the last minute. I would have added Hopewell-Loudon’s Shawn Brickner to the list if he wouldn’t have been suspended for the season finale against Mohawk.
Did I miss anyone and who would you select as the area’s MVP.

I would pick Nathan Bame for MVP he is lightning in a bottle and he is a good kid too.

I like Dysert, he's pretty much put Ada football on the map with the eye popping numbers. The only real blemish was the poor outing last Friday, but the weather had as much to do with that than LCC.
Also Wyatt Elbin should get some consideration. He's LB leading rusher and a solid defensive player for them. I think with all of the D5 an D6 teams in the area, an MVP has to contribute on both sides of the ball.
Another name that should be mentioned is Derek Hill of McComb. He's got nearly 1,000 yards rushing in McComb's pass oriented offense, and he's all over the place on defense. He's also the kicker.

Good post, it sounds good to me also because you favored Brown, lol. Brown did what he was asked and did it well. He rushed for almost 1300 yards and passed for almost 900, not bad for someone that was tossed into the fire so to say. He also scored 23 TD's and passed for 9 more. I agree with the statement about both sides of the ball. Dusty also played LB and was one of the leading tacklers on the team. Elmwood's defense did not have eye-popping numbers in tackles because they only played for 1 half about every game, well 6 out of 10. The other team also did not run many plays as Elmwood did a great job keeping the other teams offense off the field and stopping it when it was on the field. If the weather would have been decent last Friday, Brown's numbers would have been better, but Elmwood is proud of what they did. Good luck to those still playing, how about NW Ohio win a few more state titles!!

Another thing. It is odd that a kid like Dusty Brown can do so well, and still possibly not receive All-State honors. He deserves it, but it looks like it will be tough with the QB from Fairview having like 4,000 yards passing. Fairview throws like 60 times a game, rarely runs, but it's all about the numbers when it comes to that and not about how much you meant for your team. It's nice to have great numbers like that, but it's also great for teams to play other kids and get some varsity experience in your program. A lot of people could have had better numbers had they played entire games or had their coaches used them and them only, but that's life. Here's to hoping the kids that deserve it, get the honors they deserve.

Jamie:
I saw on another sports forum that you were looking for the Northwest Ohio District golf honors results.
Did you get them, and if so, will they be in the Courier Plus section on Saturday?
I imagine any of the BVC golf coaches would have these results for you.

BTW: Liberty-Benton’s Michael Busch now holds 2 state records. 1 for points kicking career. The other is extra points kicking career (he broke that one last Friday).

Lots of great points on who is deserving of an MVP award.
I have to tell you a lot of other newspapers pick and all-area team. I'm glad we don't do it. Someone would always be unhappy.
I like someone throwing Derrick Hill's name out there. He is an underrated player for all he does. And I have to apologize to him for taking his name off the top guns list one week and replacing him with a player from Vanlue.
Got the all district golf. In fact I posted a link to it on today's blog.
I think that about covers it.

With all due respect to the guys you've mentioned, especially Michael Busch who is an outstanding receiver and DB, to go with his kicking numbers; I'd give the nod to Brandon Craft of LB. He is the BVC defensive player of the year for good reason. He flat out dominated in the biggest game of the year at HN as an OLB. Had he not been surrounded by other weapons on offense, he would have put up some huge numbers there as well. Against HN, he showed both power and speed in scoring three very impressive touchdowns (run, pass, kickoff return).
