Down goes No.1

It was a long weekend.

It started with watching Columbus Grove beat Monroeville in overtime in their regional quarterfinal game Friday night. It ended with watching Findlay High School sophomore Brier Sterling in the Division I state cross country meet -- the final race of the day.

I’m not surprised Columbus Grove beat Monroeville. The Dogs played maybe one of their best defensive games of the year against the Eagles who seemed a bit conservative on offense. I was kind of surprised when they took the ball over at Grove’s 29 with 2 minutes to play they didn’t run the football, try to get it a little closer and then try a field goal to win the game. Their kicker looked to have plenty of leg in warm ups and in his two PAT kicks.

Two No.1 seeds from Northwest Ohio went down to defeat to No.8s though. Unbeaten Fremont Ross lost its rematch to Toledo Whitmer when a pitch was intercepted and returned 68 yards for a touchdown. What a way to lose.

Mohawk lost to No.8 Norwalk St. Paul 18-15. It’s not the first time the Warriors have been bounced from the tournament by a No.8. I remember Pandora-Gilboa passing all over Mohawk to beat them a few years back. I’m not sure what it is about them but every year at some point they seem to have a melt down.

Sometimes I think of the OHSAA football tournament, especially the first round, like the state wrestling tournament. Sometimes at the state wrestling tournament it isn’t the best wrestler that wins, it’s a match up of styles and some styles can beat other styles. I’m not sure if that makes any sense.

Anyway all prep sports aside from the area’s five football teams have wrapped things up for the fall. Time to start looking ahead to basketball real soon.

I don't follow wrestling very closely, but the 1-8 seeding for the OHSAA football tournament has little to do with the ability of the teams involved. A team from a tougher conference with 2-3 losses is usually better than a 10-0 team from a weak conference. Norwalk from a usually strong SBC where they play the Hurons, Oak Harbors and Sandusky St. Mary's vs. Mohawk who's only real tough games this year was Hopewell Loudon and Liberty benton.
Usually the TAAC winner is 10-0 or 9-1 with a high seed and get bounces early because that is generally a weak conference.
I think this years Van Buren and Arlington teams probably could have won the TAAC.

I can agree with some of your thinking, but your facts aren't exactly right. Norwalk St. Paul plays in the Firelands Conf. with Western Reserve, Ashland Crestview, South Central, Mapleton, Monroeville, etc. Norwalk Senior, on the other hand, (I know you're not talking about them) doesn't play in the SBC either. They are in the NOL with the likes of Bellevue, Upper, Fostoria, etc. A lot of teams that didn't win their conference would win the TAAC, most years that is.

While I agree the TAAC is generally a pretty weak sister in football and most other sports for that matter, I don't think Arlington and Van Buren necessarity would have beaten Stritch this season.

Give Mohawk's schedule a little credit. They did lose to Centerburg and also beat Division V playoff participant WYnford.
