A sports holiday
It’s a one day holiday from sports today.
This is one of my favorite days of the year -- it’s election day.
It’s the day our democracy works and we go to the polls and pick the people that we want to see run our government. Plus we decide whether or not to tax ourselves.
This year after more than a decade and a half of republican rule in Ohio it looks like the pendulum is about to swing the other way. I am a registered democrat, but that’s just because of my family ties. I came from a single parent home growing up and even had part of my college paid for by a union scholarship.
I have to admit though my thinking is far from democratic on most issues and I have rarely voted my democratic roots in the past few elections.
With a degree in political science I have always had a key interest in politics. I remember working on democratic campaigns in college and even told my mom, she had better forget Tom Harken and jump on the Mike Dukakis bandwagon in 1988 at the Ohio democratic caucus if she wanted to become a delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention. She took my advice an ended up becoming a delegate that year.
There was a time when Ohio was a solid democratic state. Dick Celeste was in the governor’s mansion and democrats like Sherrod Brown, Mary Ellen Withrow, Thomas Ferguson all held the other statewide offices. They were even in control in the Ohio General Assembly.
That was 20 years ago. Eventually scandal, corruption and abuse of power swept out the Dems and led to 20 years of ironfisted Republican rule.
Well the tide has turned and it’s time for a change. We have a joke of a governor in Bob Taft. The Tom Noe republican coin scandal, Congressman Bob Ney taking bribes. Not to mention widespread dissatisfaction with President Bush’s policy in Iraq.
While I don’t agree with where democrats stand on most of the issues and I’m probably going to hate to see someone like Nancy Pelosi, the San Francisco treat, as the new majority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s time for a change.
NOTEWORTHY:
POLITICIANS WTH SPORTS TIES: While the Dems appear poised for an Election Day sweep, two local race probably won’t be in jeopardy for the Republicans. I look for former Findlay High School football coach Cliff Hite to win in his Ohio House race today with Hancock County solidly republican I don’t think he will have much of a problem. Also state senator Jim Jordan, who incidentally was a four-time state wrestling champion for St. Paris Graham High School, should have little trouble taking over the Congressional seat being vacated by Mike Oxley. As far as Oxley goes, good riddance.
WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON: With all of the soccer and volleyball teams out of the tournament, we’re breathing a big sigh of relief. We can begin work on the basketball tab which has to be done one week from Friday. More about what we will be focusing on for our basketball tab in the coming days.
Dave is doing features on the Liberty-Benton vs. Chanel game, Mark is working on features on Hardin Northern’s regional game with Mechanicsburg and Columbus Grove’s game with Hopewell-Loudon and I am working on a feature on McComb’s Derrick Hill. Mark will be covering Hardin Northern Friday and Liberty-Benton Saturday, I will be at McComb’s game Friday night in Fremont and Greg Flores will be covering Hopewell-Loudon vs. Grove.
BLOG THIS WEEK: The meeting to pick the AP all-district teams is slated for Monday at the Courier. Tomorrow I will give you an inside look into how they pick the all-district teams.

The economy is booming and we're actually standing up to terrorists instead of waiting for them to kill us. Yea, its time for a change.
Your change will be higher taxes and and a desire to make peace and negotiate with a bunch of murderous fanatics. But at least everybody will like us.
